What Is Athlete’s Foot?

Athlete’s foot is a common fungal infection of the skin that affects the feet—most often between the toes or on the soles. Despite the name, it doesn’t only affect athletes. Anyone can develop athlete’s foot, especially in warm, moist environments.

If left untreated, the infection can spread, worsen, or recur, and in some cases lead to secondary bacterial infections.

What Causes Athlete’s Foot?

Athlete’s foot is caused by fungi that thrive in warm, damp areas. These fungi are commonly found in places such as locker rooms, public showers, swimming pools, and inside tight or sweaty shoes.

Common risk factors include:

  • Wearing closed or non-breathable shoes for long periods
  • Excessive foot sweating
  • Walking barefoot in public wet areas
  • Sharing towels, shoes, or sock
  • Weakened immune system or diabetes
  • Cracked or damaged skin on the feet

Prevention & Long-Term Care

To reduce the risk of athlete’s foot returning, we guide patients on:

  • Keeping feet clean and completely dry
  • Wearing breathable footwear and moisture-wicking socks<
  • Alternating shoes to allow proper drying
  • Using antifungal powders or sprays when needed
  • Avoiding barefoot walking in public wet areas

How We Treat Athlete’s Foot

Treatment depends on the severity and duration of the infection.

Our treatment options may include:

  • Prescription-strength topical antifungal medications
  • Oral antifungal therapy for persistent or severe cases
  • Medicated foot soaks or sprays
  • Treatment of secondary bacterial infections, if present
  • Personalized hygiene and prevention guidance<

We also focus on preventing recurrence, which is common if the underlying causes are not addressed.

When to See a Specialist

If symptoms persist, spread, become painful, or repeatedly return despite over-the-counter treatments, professional care is essential. Early treatment leads to faster relief and better long-term results.

Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis) is a fungal skin infection that affects the feet, commonly between the toes. It causes itching, burning, redness, peeling, and cracked skin.

Athlete’s foot is caused by fungi that thrive in warm, damp areas such as sweaty shoes, locker rooms, public showers, and swimming pools.

You can get athlete’s foot by walking barefoot in public wet areas, wearing tight or non-breathable shoes, sharing towels or footwear, or having prolonged moisture on the feet.

Common symptoms include itching, burning, scaling, peeling skin, redness, cracks between the toes, and sometimes blisters or thickened skin.

Diagnosis is typically made through a physical exam. In some cases, a small skin sample may be taken to confirm the fungal infection and rule out similar skin conditions.

Treatment depends on severity and may include prescription topical antifungal medications, oral antifungal therapy, medicated soaks, and guidance on foot hygiene to prevent recurrence.

Yes. Athlete’s foot can return if moisture, footwear habits, or hygiene issues are not addressed. Preventive care is a key part of treatment.

You should see a specialist if symptoms persist, spread, become painful, or keep coming back despite over-the-counter treatments.
